Aluminium vs Timber vs Barrel Outdoor Saunas
Last updated October 2026
Short answer: an aluminium-clad, insulated cabin sauna costs more upfront but needs almost no exterior upkeep and holds heat well. A timber cabin sauna has a natural look and smell but needs regular oiling or staining outdoors. A barrel sauna is usually the cheapest and quickest to heat, with less headroom and, in most designs, no wall insulation.
Side by side
| Aluminium-clad cabin (Nordhaus) | Timber cabin | Barrel | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Exterior | Powder-coated 6063-T5 aluminium battens over an insulated wall | Solid or clad timber, commonly cedar, spruce or thermally treated wood | Curved timber staves held by steel bands |
| Exterior upkeep | Rinse with fresh water. No sanding, staining or resealing. | Typically needs oiling or staining every year or two to limit greying and weathering | Typically needs oiling or staining, plus band tightening as the timber moves |
| Wall insulation | PIR panels with an aluminium vapour barrier | Varies by brand. Some are insulated, some are solid timber only. | Usually none. The staves are the wall. |
| Interior space | Flat walls and full-height ceiling, two-tier benches | Flat walls, layout varies | Curved walls reduce shoulder and head room on the upper bench |
| Look | Modern and architectural, timber look without the timber upkeep | Natural, warm, weathers over time | Distinctive rounded shape |
| Typical price position | Premium | Mid to premium | Entry to mid |
The timber cabin and barrel columns describe what is typical across the market. Individual brands differ, so check the specifications of any sauna you are considering.
Aluminium-clad cabin saunas
Nordhaus outdoor saunas use a timber interior inside an insulated wall, wrapped in powder-coated aluminium battens. The outside gives the lined look of timber cladding, and it is finished in Matte Black or Matte White. The pitched aluminium roof has a fully sealed roofline with no bitumen shingles to maintain.
Strengths: very low maintenance, stable in sun, rain and humidity, and PIR insulation that helps hold temperature. Care is a periodic rinse with fresh water, or monthly in coastal and high salt air locations.
Trade-offs: a higher purchase price than most barrel saunas, and you do not get a natural timber exterior if that is the look you want.
Timber cabin saunas
Strengths: the natural appearance and scent of timber such as cedar, and a wide choice of sizes and brands. Well-built timber cabins can last many years.
Trade-offs: exterior timber is exposed to UV and moisture, so it generally needs regular oiling or staining to keep its colour and limit cracking. Insulation varies, so ask what is inside the walls.
Barrel saunas
Strengths: usually the most affordable way into an outdoor sauna. The round shape has less air volume to heat, so many heat up quickly, and rain runs off the curve.
Trade-offs: most barrels have single-thickness stave walls with no insulation, so they can lose heat faster in cold or windy weather. Timber staves shrink and swell with the seasons, which can open small gaps until the bands are adjusted. The curved walls limit how high the benches can sit and how upright you can lean.
Which suits you?
Choose an aluminium-clad cabin if you want the lowest upkeep, live near the coast or in a humid climate, or want a modern look beside a pool or contemporary home.
Choose a timber cabin if a natural timber exterior matters most to you and you are happy to maintain it.
Choose a barrel if budget is the priority and you like the shape.
Common questions
Does an aluminium sauna get too hot to touch in the sun?
Any dark exterior surface warms in direct sun, as a dark timber or steel surface would. The insulated wall separates the cladding from the interior, so it does not affect the sauna's performance.
Is the inside of a Nordhaus sauna aluminium too?
No. The interior is Canadian Hemlock, with benches, walls and ceiling in timber. Aluminium is used only for the exterior cladding and roof.
How long is the warranty?
Nordhaus outdoor saunas carry a 5 year residential warranty on the cabin, cladding and electrical components. See the warranty page for full terms.
