Outdoor Sauna Electrical Requirements in Australia
Last updated October 2026
Short answer: every outdoor sauna needs its own dedicated circuit installed by a licensed electrician. As a guide, Harvia recommends 3 phase 3 x 10A or single phase 35A for the 6kW heater, and 3 phase 3 x 16A or single phase 50A for the 9kW heater. A full spectrum infrared sauna drawing 3,400W needs a 15 amp circuit. These are recommendations only. Your electrician on site decides what is suitable for each individual installation.
Harvia recommendations by Nordhaus outdoor sauna
| Sauna | Heater | Recommended supply |
|---|---|---|
| 3 Person Outdoor Traditional | Harvia The Wall 6kW | Dedicated circuit. 3 phase: 3 x 10A. Single phase: 35A. |
| 4-5 Person Outdoor Traditional | Harvia The Wall 9kW | Dedicated circuit. 3 phase: 3 x 16A. Single phase: 50A. |
| 3 Person Outdoor Full Spectrum Infrared | 8 far infrared panels plus 2 full spectrum heaters, 3,400W total | 15 amp dedicated circuit, either a 15 amp socket or hardwired |
The traditional sauna figures are Harvia's recommendations for each heater and are a guide only. Every installation is different. Your licensed electrician on site decides what is suitable for your individual case, including cable size, circuit protection and isolator rating.
Single phase or 3 phase: what is the difference?
Most Australian homes have single phase power. Some homes also have 3 phase power, often because of ducted air conditioning, a pool heater, an EV charger or a workshop. A 9kW heater on 3 phase spreads its load across three phases, which is why Harvia recommends only 16 amps per phase.
If you are not sure which you have, your electrician can tell you from your switchboard and meter in a few minutes. If you are single phase only and want the 4-5 Person, ask your electrician whether your supply can support a dedicated 50 amp circuit. Upgrading a home to 3 phase is possible in many areas, and your electrician or electricity distributor can quote it.
What your electrician needs to do
Traditional saunas
The electrician runs the dedicated circuit to the sauna and connects the heater through the Harvia Fenix power box, which sits inside the cabin under the bottom bench. They supply the heater power cable and the 12V LED driver that runs the interior lights. Nordhaus provides the Harvia wiring recommendations to pass on, and your electrician decides the final cable size and protection on site. It is a one-time job, commonly completed in under an hour once the circuit is in place.
Full spectrum infrared saunas
The electrician installs a 15 amp dedicated circuit and either fits a weather-suitable 15 amp socket or wires the sauna in directly. The 15 amp plug is supplied by your electrician. A standard 10 amp household power point is not suitable.
Before you order: a five-minute checklist
- Send your electrician the product page for the sauna you want.
- Ask whether your switchboard has capacity for the dedicated circuit.
- Confirm single phase or 3 phase if you are considering the 4-5 Person.
- Ask for a quote for the cable run from the switchboard to where the sauna will sit.
- Plan the sauna position so the cable can enter neatly at the base.
Common questions
Can I plug an outdoor traditional sauna into a normal power point?
No. A 6kW or 9kW heater draws far more than a 10 amp power point can supply. It must be hardwired on its own circuit by a licensed electrician.
How much does it cost to run?
At full power and typical 2026 electricity rates of 33 to 40 cents per kWh, a 6kW heater costs about $2.00 to $2.40 an hour, a 9kW heater about $3.00 to $3.60, and the 3,400W infrared sauna about $1.10 to $1.40. Heaters cycle on and off once the sauna is at temperature, so real sessions usually cost less.
Is it safe to have electrics in an outdoor sauna?
Yes, when installed correctly. In Nordhaus traditional saunas the electrical components sit inside the cabin under the bottom seat, not in the roof, and use an IPX5-rated Harvia Fenix power box compliant with AS/NZS 60335.2.53. All fixed wiring in Australia must be done by a licensed electrician.
Does Nordhaus organise the electrician?
You arrange your own licensed electrician. We supply the Harvia wiring recommendations, and our team can talk your electrician through anything on 0401 696 261.
